Magnesium - are you getting enough?

January 3, 2017 SARA JACKSON

Do you get mad chocolate cravings, muscle cramps, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, trouble getting your z’s and constipation from time to time?? If any of these common complaints are ringing your bell then you may be low in magnesium.

In fact, it’s one of the most common minerals for people to be lacking. Magnesium is required by the body for over 300 different enzymatic processes around the body to work efficiently.

Magnesium is important for the nervous system and for muscle function. It contributes to a healthy immune system, keeps the heart beat stable and contributes to strong bones. Its also required to even out blood glucose levels and helps with energy and protein production within the body.

Lots of the smoothie recipes in the SJH 30 day smoothie hormone challenge feature magnesium rich ingredients such as leafy greens especially spinach, avocado, nuts and seeds. Increasing these foods are some of the easiest and most economical ways to boost your magnesium levels! So you can work on all those pesky symptoms of magnesium insufficiency in one fell swoop all before 10am! Who knew….

Model Nutrition Workshop with Squad Model Agency
17 July 2018

Lucky enough to be invited to give the nutrition workshops for the Summer Squad Development Day, I was overwhelmed at how interested this bunch of new superstars were about nutrition. I genuinely love getting involved with model nutrition as there are a lot of myths out there. I know this first hand, having worked closely in the industry for 15 years prior to retraining as a Nutritional Therapist and Naturopath. So it's an honour and such a sign of the times that top London models agencies like The Squad are aligned with helping their models be in supermodel shape the right way, and truly care about, and invest in their models' health.

Healthy Pesto in a flash
18 October 2016

I love pesto - I use it as a dip with raw crudites, a spread on oat cakes and a topping for salads, soups, fish and of course pasta. I love a healthy pesto even more - so this recipe has become a firm favourite in my household. I make it all the time. It literally takes 3 minutes to make, and if you store it in an air tight jar in the fridge it last around 5 days.

Coco-chia pudding with berries
10 October 2016

I love this sweet guilt-free dish because chia puddings are so versatile. They're great for a quick breakfast topped with some homemade granola or pumpkin seeds, as you can prepare them the night before so it's literally a matter of grab and go from the fridge on the way to the office or school. They’re a good quick after school snack or for an easy pudding and you can pretty them up enough for any dinner party. It’s a super easy way of getting some more protein, fibre and omega 3’s in with the amazing chia seeds...the texture might take a little getting used to for some though! You can do the ultimate cheat & make a pudding with your leftover berry smoothie mix for this too...

Beautiful Raw Bliss Balls
10 October 2016

Super easy to make, they’re a weekly fixture in our household - they contain no refined sugar, dairy or gluten but still heavy on the sweet stuff from the dates. They’re jam packed with plant proteins to keep you energised, essential nutrients, good fats and antioxidants to keep the rest of your body systems humming. These are way better for you than a chocolate bar or biscuit as an afternoon pick me up. All that and they take literally minutes to make...what are you waiting for?!

Better Bolognese (veggie)
9 May 2016

Better because it’s plant based...super yum and totally healthy. Who doesn’t crave comfort food from time to time, right? This still delivers on the comfort front, but it’s a plate of delicious pasta that won’t make you feel like a lead balloon needing a nap afterwards. Lentils are my fave legume as they’re so affordable, available everywhere and crucially pack an amazing nutrient punch with 11 g of protein and 15g fiber per cooked cup.

Healthier Anzac Biscuits
25 April 2016

Today marks Anzac Day which if you don’t know is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Although my kids have been born & bred in London, it’s important to me that they’re aware of Australian history and we always pay our respects to our fallen soldiers. And what better way that through food right? Anzac biscuits,  it has been claimed, were sent by wives to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. Traditionally they were made with golden syrup, sugar and butter, but I’ve adapted this to using healthier more nutritious ingredients and these beauties are dairy and gluten free.

I love any way of sneaking more greens into my day and these just happen to be the tastiest way of doing just that. It also feels like you’re having something with that carby-comfort food vibe - seriously these are so good, you just want to keep eating them, and the good news if you can. Since they are gluten free and made with a truckload of veggies and herbs with a little cheese, eggs and buckwheat flour, they are pretty guilt free.

Gorgeous Green Soup
7 March 2016

Leafy greens are the most readily available super-food ever. They hold more nutrients and vitamins per calorie than any other food, and most people don’t realise that they are actually supposed to eat at least 2 or 3 portions of leafy greens everyday to get their required dose of vitamins A, C, E, K, B vitamins not to mention tons of minerals, fiber and even protein. Studies have shown that our green friends not only help our livers flush out all the toxins, but may play a big part in controlling food allergies, inflammatory diseases and obesity, and may even prevent the development of bowel cancers. So super they need a cape, right...?!

Blueberry and Vanilla Chia Pudding
6 March 2016

I was experimenting with a super easy nice-cream (aka healthy dairy-free ice cream) for my littlies the other day. It worked so well with blueberries, I was inspired by Green Kitchen Stories this week to build on that idea and make a simple delicious blueberry pudding. The prep for this is done in minutes, and you can dress it up to serve as a classy dessert for friends, or as a sweet snack anytime. My clients are always looking for a quick breakfast-on-the-go and this ticks that box too. Good post workout snack too.
